Service Dogs for Autism
However, we do have a large and ever-growing body of research to indicate service dogs for autism help children and adults with all levels of ASD live independent, empowered lives. In addition to the CDC’s 2014 figures about children, many adults with ASD never had the benefit of an official diagnosis. Although the term ‘Autism’ was first coined in 1908, for many decades thereafter it was lumped with other conditions including Schizophrenia, or mishandled by clinicians like Psychologist Bruno Bettelheim. It was not until the late 1970’s that researchers began looking at genetic and biological reasons for ASD, which continues to the present day.
Autism Service Dog Facts
Over the past 40+ years, we have learned a tremendous amount about how to best help accommodate and nurture people of all ages with ASD. This includes providing adults and children across the ASD with an autism service dog. For the past few decades, the demand for service dogs for autism has grown exponentially. These dogs are highly trained to provide instant and sustained comfort, safety, security and support for their handlers. For example:
Therapy Dogs for Autistic Children
There are several different levels of canines for people with ASD. Although official service dogs for autism are the most well-known, the past several years have witnessed an increase in therapy dogs for autistic children and adults. In general, therapy dogs for autistic children and adults do not receive the same level of training as service dogs before being placed. A few other important differences include:
Some people choose therapy dogs for autistic children and adults instead of service dogs because of the higher perceived cost of ownership. Others choose them because it can be easier to find a canine with an excellent demeanor that requires relatively little training to become a therapy dog. Still others are even able to find and purchase a canine that has previously served as a therapy dog at a school or hospital.
We realize the decision between service dogs and therapy dogs for autistic children and adults rests with whoever is making the choice. However and based on our extensive experience, we strongly recommend educating yourself in all aspects of both types of dogs in order to ensure the canine companion you choose meets its handler’s every need.
